The axis of evil - a polarization perspective
The low multipoles in the Cosmic Microwave Background are strongly aligned, posing a challenge to the isotropy of the Universe. There is an ongoing discussion about whether this alignment is simply due to a chance fluctuation in the CMB temperature map, if it can be blamed on local structures or on systematics in the measurement, or whether it is actually due to a preferred direction intrinsic to our Universe. We address the first of these questions by looking at a complementary dataset: if the alignment is also seen in a dataset which is independent of the CMB temperature map, it is unlikely that it is just a statistical flaw. We use the WMAP polarization data in order to obtain such an independent dataset and search for the alignment in the latter.
